Carbondale, IL : One dead in Pinckneyville rollover crash on Friday, March 10, 2017

An Urbana man died Friday in a two-vehicle crash north of Pinckneyville.

Kyung Yong Lee, 57, died after he was ejected from his vehicle after the crash.

According to a police report from the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, around 10:20 p.m. John Simpkins, 43, of Hurst, was driving a 2012 Dodge Charger south on Illinois 127, near Carnation Road, while Lee was driving his 2003 Chevrolet Suburban north. According to the report, Simpkins crossed the median line for an unknown reason and struck Lee’s vehicle.


Simpkins’ car left the roadway and was found in a nearby field. Lee’s vehicle left the roadway and rolled multiple times before coming to rest next to a power pole. Lee was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Pinckneyville Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Simpkins was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officials said the investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

This is the third fatal traffic crash in Perry County in two weeks. On Feb. 27, Brian Scholebo, 25, of Pinckneyville, died after a crash on Illinois 154 east of Rose of Sharon Road. Anthony Hagene, 30, of Steeleville, died Thursday after a three-vehicle crash on Illinois 154 southwest of Tamaroa.
