Newton County, TX : One man dead and two others were injured in a early Thursday morning three-vehicle crash on September 18th 2014
A Lumberton man was killed and two others were injured in an early morning crash in Newton County.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis, the three-vehicle accident happened at 5:45 a.m. on Highway 87 just north of Highway 12.
A Dodge pickup truck driven by a 57-year-old Orange man was traveling northbound on Highway 87 when a Chevrolet two-door passenger vehicle approached the Dodge from behind, according to Davis. Nathan Harves, the 21-year-old driver of the Chevrolet, attempted to pass the Dodge in a curve, which is a no passing zone, she said in a prepared statement.
As the Chevrolet began to pass in the curve, the car met a Ford pickup truck traveling southbound on Highway 87. Harves veered back into the northbound lane and lost control of the vehicle when he tried to over-correct, Davis said.
The Chevrolet went back into the southbound traffic lane, striking the Ford, which was driven by a 48-year-old Wiergate man, according to Davis. After colliding with the Ford, the Chevrolet continued back into the northbound lane and struck the Dodge truck.
Harves, who is from Lumberton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
