Sumter,SC : Driver still hospitalized after wreck at elementary school on January, Sunday 21st 2018
The driver of the sedan that crashed into the front of Alice Drive Elementary School on Sunday morning is still in the hospital because of medical issues that may have caused the wreck.
The driver - a man said to be in his 50s according to Sumter Police Department - was traveling southbound on Alice Drive about 11 a.m., in the direction of Swan Lake-Iris Gardens, when a medical issue caused him to steer the vehicle to the left over the oncoming lane and onto school grounds. The medical issue was not specified.
The man sustained minor injuries after driving through the exit side of the school's driveway, knocking down two road signs and hitting the brick exterior near an entrance to the school building.
The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle, said Tonyia McGirt, Sumter Police Department public information officer. The man was taken to Palmetto Health Tuomey, where he remains because of his medical condition, she said.
McGirt said the driver will not be charged.
Visible damage to the building includes cracked and displaced bricks on the exterior wall and a broken flower pot. The front end of the sedan appeared to have sustained significant damage.
Damage to the school is still being assessed, said Shelly Galloway, a spokeswoman for Sumter School District, on Sunday.
Estimated damage to the vehicle was not available by press time Monday.
