William Kilday, a 47-year-old from San Jose, was killed in a motorcycle crash on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Kilday was riding a 2006 Harley Davidson Sportster south on Highway 1 just before the Morrissey Boulevard exit about 4 p.m., California Highway Patrol officer Brad Sadek said.

A 49-year-old Watsonville man was driving a 2000 GMC 3500 pickup in front of Kilday, and the Watsonville driver began to slow for heavy traffic, authorities said.

Kilday collided with the back of the pickup and was thrown from his motorcycle, Sadek said.

Authorities pronounced Kilday dead at the scene. Investigators continued to probe the cause of the crash on Wednesday, Sadek said.

Two of three lanes of south Highway 1 were closed as authorities investigated and cleaned up the wreck. All lanes were reopened about 5:30 p.m.
