Brentwood, CA : 17-year-old teen injured after car crashes into tree on Balfour Road and Minnesota Avenue on Sunday night, November 30, 2014
A teenage driver injured Sunday night when his car crashed into a tree is expected to be OK, police said.
Rescue personnel needed hydraulic tools to free the 17-year-old from the white compact car and said his injuries appeared to be critical. Police said he was taken by ambulance to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he was conscious and alert.
The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. on Balfour Road and Minnesota Avenue, when another car pulled out in front of the teen, Brentwood police Lt. Ben Tolero said. The teen's car swerved into the median, then smashed into the tree, Tolero said.
The boy went to the hospital by ambulance after a medical helicopter summoned to the scene was unable to fly due to rainy weather, said Batallion Chief Hugh Henderson of the East Contra Costa County Fire District.
Crews shut down Balfour Road in both directions after the crash while the scene was investigated. The driver of the other car was not injured and cooperated with police. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash, Tolero said.
