Memphis, TN : 10 people injured in a nine-vehicle crash near Holmes Road on Monday morning, April 11, 2016
Ten people were injured in a nine-vehicle crash that shut down Riverdale Road near Holmes Road on Monday morning.
Shelby County Sheriff's Office said a flatbed semi-truck traveling on Riverdale Road slammed into the back of eight cars stopped at a red light. The truck hit the first car stopped at the light with enough force to damage the next seven cars in line.
"My heart panicked," driver Otis Amos recalled. "I didn't know what to expect."
Amos' wife was in one of the cars involved in the crash.
"I was panicking and lost control and ran over and said, 'Where is everybody and who all is hurt?'" Amos said.
Amos' wife was one of ten people taken to the hospital after the crash. One of those ten is in critical condition, but all of them are considered stable.
"It was hard to see her like that," Amos said. "She couldn't talk--couldn't say anything. But she did come around and say, 'I'm OK.'"
Police said it's unclear exactly why the truck crashed into the back of the stopped cars, but one victim who did not want to be identified said the truck appeared to be speeding.
No matter what investigators ultimately determine to be the cause of the crash, Shelby County deputies said drivers need to be extra careful when the roads are wet.
"On days like this, even if its a light rain, drivers need to be aware the roads are a lot more slick," deputy Jeremy Finch said. "It takes longer to stop."
