Midland, MI : Two men who died early morning when two pickup trucks collided on May, Tuesday 9th 2017
The Midland County Sheriff’s Office has identified two men who died early Tuesday morning when two pickup trucks collided head-on on U.S. 10 in Jerome Township.
Brandon Scherzer, 23, Freeland, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado west in the westbound lanes. The Chevy and a 2000 Dodge Dakota, driven east in the westbound lanes by Steven Fitch, 57, Lake, collided.
Both died at the scene of the 4:51 a.m. crash on the highway east of M-18.
Midland County Sheriff Scott Stephenson said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Blood has been sent for analysis, and reports will take at least a month, he added.
Midland County Central Dispatch received the first call reporting a vehicle being driven eastbound in the westbound lanes of U.S. 10, west of Coleman Road, at 4:41 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies were sent to check the area, as dispatchers received several other calls from witnesses updating the vehicle’s location.
The crash resulted in the closure of the westbound lanes of the highway between West River Road and M-18 at 5 a.m. One lane reopened about 9 a.m. as investigators conducted accident reconstruction. The highway was completely open at 1 p.m.
The names of the deceased were withheld until family members were notified.
A report will be sent to the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office for review when the investigation is complete.
