Torrance,CA : speed possible factor in fiery Long Beach crash; 2 killed, both 19 on October, Sunday 15th 2017

A man and a woman, both 19, were killed in a fiery two-car crash late Saturday night along the downtown shoreline in Long Beach, police said Sunday.

The victims, riding together in a 2003 Nissan, have not yet been identified, but police said they both live in Long Beach.

When police arrived at the scene at 10:40 p.m. on Shoreline Drive south of Ocean Boulevard, they found a male driver who had been rescued from a burning vehicle. He was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

The woman, a passenger in the car, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The preliminary investigation revealed the Nissan was heading northbound on Shoreline Drive from Linden Avenue when the driver made an “unsafe lane change” in front of a 2011 Infinity and lost control of the car, police said.

“Upon losing control, the 2003 Nissan collided with the raised center median, a tree and then a concrete barrier,” police said in the statement. “After colliding with the concrete barrier the 2003 Nissan spun away in a northeasterly direction, collided with the 2011 Infinity and came to rest near the east curb of Shoreline Drive, south of Ocean Boulevard.”

The driver of the Infinity, a 24-year-old resident of Long Beach, was uninjured. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, and was later released from the scene, officials said.

Police said “excessive speed” may have played a role in the collision. Any additional witnesses are asked to contact Det. Sirilo Garcia of the Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355.
