Batavia,NY : Boss remembers his young employee killed in crash on April, tuesday 25th 2017
Joseph Manley started working for Weed Man last fall as a part-time lawn care worker.
“He was a very good worker,” owner Ken Bieber said. “He was really excited about working here.”
His best friend is a longtime employee of the company and Manley’s cousin also worked for Weed Man, Bieber said.
Their recommendations is what caused Bieber to hire Manley and to offer him a full-time job, providing he got his driver’s license in the off-season.
Manley, just 19, did get his license, and last month began working full-time as a lawn care technician.
Manley was working in Lancaster Tuesday afternoon and was returning to the Weed Man shop in Albion when he drove off Route 77 in Alabama and slammed into a tree.
He was pronounced dead at the scene of the 5 p.m. crash.
So far, state police investigators have no idea why Manley went off the road. He was driving the Ford F250 Weed Man truck at normal speeds, Bieber said.
“We can track the truck’s speed and he was doing 57 in a 55,” he said. “There were no skid marks and he went across the center line and off the other side of the road.”
Manley grew up in Lyndonville with his mother, grandparents and three younger brothers. Bieber said he was living in Waterport at the time of his death.
Bieber said Manley was a great employee who was cheerful and loved doing outside work.
He also liked working on cars, he said.
“After he got his license he bought a car and fixed it up,” he said. “He liked tinkering with cars.”
Bieber talked with Manley’s family and has been working with Weed Man’s corporate officers in Canada and the U.S. to set up a GoFundMe page to help Manley’s family.
Funeral arrangements for Manley are not complete at this time.
