Columbus, GA : 24-year-old Fort Valley State University student killed in single-vehicle crash in Warner Robins on Wednesday 5 October 2016
A 24-year-old Fort Valley State University student from Columbus was killed early Wednesday in a single-vehicle crash in Warner Robins, Ga., according to the university’s website.
Gary Earl Johnson Jr., a husband and father expecting a second child in December, died as the result of a single-vehicle crash that occurred at 12:21 a.m. Wednesday. Details about the incident are limited pending further investigation by Warner Robins Police.
Johnson was scheduled to graduate in December. He was a former Blue Machine Marching Band drum major, as well as a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity.
Donta Truss, vice provost for the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Management, said the campus community as a whole is mourning the student’s death. It resonates across campus and has left the student body dismayed, he added.
“At FVSU, we deeply feel every loss such as this because we are such a tight-knit family,” said Truss, who described Johnson as a dynamic young man. “We have sent our condolences to the family and will be reaching out to inquire about how we can assist further.”
Johnson was recognized Wednesday night in a student-led candlelight vigil on campus near Patton Hall. FVSU’s Office of Student Health and Counseling Services is providing emotional care and comfort to attendees.
Details on funeral arrangements and/or memorial services are still pending.
