Phoenix, AZ : School bus and van crash head-on in Mesa on Tuesday afternoon, August 16, 2016

A school bus and a van were involved in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon in east Mesa, injuring at least one driver, officials said.

There were no children in the school bus at the time of the crash near University Drive and 93rd Street, a Rural/Metro Fire official said.

The driver of the van was flown to a hospital in critical condition. The driver and a passenger in the school bus were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The spokesman said the van crossed all lanes of traffic and ran head-on into the bus. It wasn't immediately clear whether speed or impairment played a role.

University Drive was said to be closed in both directions between Ellsworth and Crismon roads approaching the evening commute.
