SEYMOUR, IN : Ohio motorcyclist dies in Jackson County accident on Saturday, 31st August 2019
A motorcyclist from Ohio died after he was found at an accident scene off the exit ramp from the I-65 northbound lanes to State Road 11 in Jackson County.
Indiana State Troopers Korry Clark and Ed Olibo initially responded to the report of a single vehicle motorcycle crash Saturday after someone reported spotting a yellow 2018 Honda motorcycle off the roadway on I-65 at Exit 55. Upon arriving on scene, troopers located the driver of the motorcycle, Ivan F. Hammond, 78, Monclova, Ohio, who was deceased at the scene, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police spokesman.
Evidence at the scene along with other information gathered by investigators indicated that the crash likely occurred sometime on Friday, Wheeles said.
Investigators believe that Hammond likely crashed a day earlier but that his motorcycle was not observed sooner due to the distance and location it was in relation to the roadway. A missing person report had been filed in Ohio earlier today as family was not able to contact Hammond who was overdue in returning home.
The initial investigation indicated that Hammond was traveling northbound on I-65 when he attempted to exit onto State Road 11. Investigators believe Hammond was traveling too fast for the exit. His motorcycle left the roadway and overturned. Hammond was thrown from the motorcycle which caused him to sustain fatal injuries, Wheeles said. Hammond was wearing a helmet and other protective clothing at the time of the crash.
