Waco, TX : Big-rig driver hurt in rollover accident near South University Parks Drive and La Salle Avenue on Monday afternoon, September 12, 2016

A truck driver hauling concrete sand was taken to the hospital after rolling his rig near the intersection of South University Parks Drive and La Salle Avenue on Monday afternoon.

Shortly after noon, a truck driver in his early 40s was merging off South University Parks Drive onto eastbound La Salle Avenue when his truck and trailer rolled onto their left side, Waco police Officer Richard Flores said.

Initial reports indicated that the driver may have been ejected from the vehicle, but Flores was unable to confirm that after emergency medical crews loaded the driver into an ambulance.
“He may have been able to crawl out, but we haven’t been able to talk to him,” Flores said. “The accident is still under investigation.”

The name of the driver was not available.
“I didn’t see the accident, but I was about 15 minutes behind him,” said Richard Yaap, a truck driver for an Alvarado trucking company. “I passed him as he was leaving the pit, waved at him, but when I came back, I don’t know if he was going too fast or what, but I didn’t think I’d see this.”
Yaap said the driver was hauling for the same company he was driving for Monday. He said the two had picked up a load of sand from a South Waco sand pit before the driver planned to head back to Alvarado at the time of the wreck.

Assistant Waco Fire Chief Patrick Kerwin said the driver was lying outside the truck when emergency crews arrived at the scene. He appeared to suffer injuries to his arm and a possible broken left leg.
The driver was conscious and speaking with medical responders as they took him to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center for treatment.

Debris from the inside of the truck was lying outside the vehicle as oil seeped from the leaking engine of the truck. Emergency responders used portions of the spilled sand to create a barricade around the oil to keep it pooled in one location, Flores said.

A tow company and a cleanup crew were called to the scene to remove the vehicle and clear the roadway as officers continued to investigate the wreck.
