Two people died and three were injured Sunday night in a six-vehicle crash east of Jerome when a Twin Falls man drove the wrong way on Interstate 84.
It was unclear Monday what led Brian Trappen, 36, to drive the wrong way. An Idaho State Police official said he has no further information and the incident is still under investigation.
ISP responded to the crash at 7:05 p.m. at milepost 168, it said in a statement. Maricruz Lenhart, 51, of Middleton, and a child who was driving the 2005 Dodge Caravan died at the scene. Their family has been notified.
Trappen was driving a 2003 Ford F250 pickup east in the westbound lanes. The Dodge Caravan, traveling west, swerved to avoid hitting Trappen, rolled into the median and landed in the eastbound lanes, ISP said.
Francisco Delatorre, 48, of Middleton, who was a passenger in the 2005 Dodge Caravan, was thrown from the van and flown to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello. He was in stable condition, as of Monday morning.
Trappen was taken by ambulance to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center in Twin Falls, then flown to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. He was in serious condition, as of Monday morning.
