Baltimore, MD : Loyola University student died in car accident in Colorado on Friday, December 26, 2014

A Loyola University resident assistant and biology major was killed in a car accident Friday in Colorado, the university reported.

Colleen Zirkle, a junior who was also majoring in chemistry, died after she was driving from Kansas to Colorado with her uncle, brother and cousin, when their vehicle hit ice and struck a tree, Loyola President Rev. Brian F. Linnane said in a message to Loyola students and staff. Zirkle and her uncle died while her brother and cousin were injured.

Zirkle hailed from Derby, Kansas, and was active at Loyola, working as a DJ for WLOY radio and volunteering at a homeless shelter through Health Outreach Baltimore. She was a member of the crew team.

Linnane said grief counselors will be available for students when they return from winter break, and he said other counseling options are available by visiting loyola.edu/counselingcenter.

Zirkle's funeral will be held in Liberty, Mo., but no details have been set, Linnane said. Loyola will also schedule a memorial mass sometime in January, he added.
