A 53-year-old male pedestrian from Jena was struck and killed Monday night in a single-vehicle crash on US Hwy 71 near LA Hwy 3170.
Louisiana State Police reported the crash involved a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 18-year-old James R. Sawtelle IV of Alexandria. The pedestrian was identified as Michael C. Duncan.
State police said the Chevrolet was northbound on US Hwy 71 when Duncan, who was reportedly wearing dark clothing, attempted to cross the roadway from east to west. Sawtelle's vehicle collided with him in the roadway. Sawtelle, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured. Duncan was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Routine toxicology tests are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
State police remind pedestrians that when walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians walking at night should try to carry a flashlight for added safety. Pedestrians should always walk on a sidewalk, but if there is not a sidewalk available, they should walk on the shoulder, or if no shoulder is available, as close to the roadway edge facing traffic.
