Havelock, NC : One woman injured in wreck on U.S. 70 service road in front of Boone’s Truck Center on Friday afternoon, July 8, 2016

A woman was transported to the hospital Friday afternoon when she collided with a pickup truck and overturned in Havelock.

Witnesses said the driver of a Chevrolet Spark, which is a two-door compact car, ran a stop sign on U.S. 70 service road in front of Boone’s Truck Center in Havelock, causing the crash.

Police identified her as Lori E. Turner, 54, of Morehead City. She was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign and no liability insurance.

At the time Turner entered the intersection, an F-150 driven by Joe Couch, 48, of Havelock, was turning off U.S. 70 East and onto the service road.

The two vehicles collided, flipping the smaller vehicle on its top.

“I was just pulling in off of 70 and she ran the stop sign,” said Couch, who was unhurt. “She was doing every bit of 50, every bit of it.”

Turner was pulled from her car by a passerby. Havelock Fire and Rescue personnel transported the woman to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern following the 3:40 p.m. crash. Her condition was not immediately available.

Both drivers were alone.

Danny Walsh, who operates the car and truck dealership where the wreck happened, said drivers run the stop sign frequently.

“They can’t see it,” said Walsh, a Havelock commissioners. “The biggest problem is when you’re coming down the road, you’ve got cars coming at you and a stop sign that is exactly the same height. Shiny cars on your left-hand side and flags waving on them and you can’t see that one little stop sign. I’m not an expert at this but there needs to be something else, a cross painting or some notches to make you slow down. There’s just too much in your way to be able to see the stop sign.”

The Havelock Police Department investigated the crash.
