CEDAR LAKE, IN : One injured in train-vs-car crash in Cedar Lake on Tuesday, May 30, 2017
Police say a man disregarded a traffic signal Tuesday night and drove into the path of a southbound freight train near 137th and Parrish avenues.
The 23-year-old man from Cedar Lake was transported to the hospital Tuesday. The extent of his injuries were not known, according to Cedar Lake Deputy Police Chief Carl Brittingham, but the injuries did not appear life threatening.
Police were dispatched about 6:37 p.m. Tuesday to the CSX railroad crossing at West 137th Avenue just east of Parrish Avenue for a report of train-versus-car crash, Brittingham said.
The CSX train was traveling at about 38 miles per hour at the point of impact, forcing the man's white 2008 Dodge Nitro sports utility vehicle to be pushed down the tracks about 2,300 ft. before coming to a stop.
