A single-vehicle crash Sunday evening east of Athens killed a Somerville man, according to state troopers.
Aaron James Garlen, 19, died when the 2009 Mazda 6i he was driving left the roadway on U.S. 72 and overturned, troopers said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"He loved his family more than anything in this world," said his mother, Tracey Jones Erklenz, in a text. "We have lost our brightest light."
Garlen attended Brewer High School. He was employed in landscaping and roofing.
The crash occurred at 6:50 p.m. Garlen was headed west on U.S. 72, and the accident happened just east of Cambridge Lane, said Limestone County Coroner Mike West.
A passenger in the car was taken by Athens EMS to Huntsville Hospital, said West, who didn't know the condition of the passenger.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, troopers said.
"Aaron had an amazing way with words," Erklenz said. "He always knew exactly what to say no matter the situation. ... He wanted to make everyone in his life, laugh ... and man he did!"
