A 43-year-old Delray Beach man died in a crash on Interstate 95 and another motorist may have been instrumental in keeping the crash from escalating.

Thomas V. Rankin was driving a black 2017 Dodge Charger on northbound I-95 approaching Woolbright Road in Boynton Beach about 3 p.m. Monday, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

His car veered off the highway and was sideswiping along the concrete barrier wall in the median, investigators said.

As it was approaching a curve in the roadway, a passing motorist saw the crash and feared the Charger would hit the curved wall and veer back into traffic, the FHP report stated.

The unidentified motorist pulled in front of the Charger until it slowed to about 5 mph, investigators said.
