San Leandro, CA : Woman Killed, 4 Others Injured In two car crash on I-880 near Marina Boulevard on Sunday, July 27, 2014
A 71-year-old Oakland woman died and four other people were injured Sunday during a two-vehicle crash along Interstate 880, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The wreck took place just before 9:10 a.m. on southbound I-880, near Marina Boulevard, Officer Leonel Tirona said Monday.
Investigators say a 65-year-old Hayward woman -- the only occupant in a convertible Chrysler Sebring -- was driving south on I-880 when she lost control of the car, veered across four lanes of traffic and struck a Toyota Prius traveling southbound.
During the impact, a 71-year-old woman in the back right seat of the Toyota was fatally injured. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, Tirona said.
The woman has been identified as Nelia Palencia of Oakland, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Office.
The three other people in the Prius, a 35-year-old woman, and two other male passengers ages 40 and 71, all from Hayward, suffered major injuries in the crash and were taken to local hospitals to be treated for unknown injuries.
The driver of the Chrysler suffered minor injuries. No charges have been filed against that driver and the cause of the crash remained under investigation on Monday.
