Kansasville, WI : 10-year-old boy critically injured in an ATV accident in the Town of Dover on Monday afternoon, March 30, 2015

A 10-year-old boy was being treated for life-threatening injuries after an ATV accident Monday afternoon at a rural property near Highway 75, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s deputies and Kansasville Fire and Rescue crews were called to the home in the 300 block of South Beaumont Avenue (Highway 75) at 4:18 p.m. While en route, first responders were told that CPR was in progress, said Kansasville Fire Chief Scott Remer.

Remer said crews arriving on scene found that the boy had signs of life and they immediately summoned Flight for Life to transport him to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa.

Remer said that while the boy was found in a back part of the property, it was not far off the driveway and was accessible to rescue crews. The Sheriff’s Office reported that the boy was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The boy was transported from the scene by ambulance to the Kansasville fire station on Highway 11, where the Flight for Life helicopter landed.

While not wanting to comment specifically on the details of the accident, Remer said that state Department of Natural Resources rules require operators of ATVs to be at least 12 and complete an online safety course to get a certificate to be able to ride with a parent or guardian.

“We don’t know if he was with family or what the circumstances were,” Remer said.

In a press release sent Monday night, the Sheriff’s Office added no insight into the details of the accident, saying only that it occurred on private property.

Following the incident, the 20 members of the Kansasville Fire Department who responded to the call had a private debriefing to make sure they were coping with the emotional stress of the call, Remer said.

“Especially with something like this involving a child, we want to make sure our members are OK,” Remer said. “Mentally it can be very straining on them. It’s always traumatic when children are involved.”

Remer said that if necessary, first responders could be given time off or referred for counseling services.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the call by the Wisconsin Sate Patrol and the DNR.
