15-year-old driver hits tree, kills passenger in possible street race on June, Tuesday 27th 2017
A 15-year-old slammed a car into a tree Tuesday night, killing her 36-year-old passenger after driving at a high rate of speed in what could have been a street race, police said.
Glenis Mullins III of St. Petersburg died at the scene of the 11 p.m. crash in the westbound lanes of the 6300 block of Park Boulevard. Pinellas Park police did not release the name of the driver.
Mullins' 15-year-old son was also in the red Mazda 3, along with another 15-year-old, a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old.
The Mazda and a brown Nissan were both speeding, police said, when an uninvolved car pulled onto Park Boulevard from 62nd Way N. That prompted the Nissan, driven by Andrew Lightsey, 27, to change lanes and side-swipe the Mazda, police said. The Mazda's driver lost control, police said, and struck the tree.
Police said they are "looking into the possibility" the cars were racing each other, according to a news release. But police also said none of the parties in either car knew each other and that the incident "appears to be a random event that took place between them."
Mullins was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time of the crash. The other five passengers were sent to the hospital and treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Lightsey and his front-seat passenger were not seriously injured.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and criminal charges may be filed.
