Newport News, VA : Police ID man killed in fiery crash on James River Bridge on Wednesday August 31, 2016
One person died in a fiery crash on the James River Bridge Wednesday, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said.
Shortly after 4 p.m., Charles Mitchell Jr., of Smithfield, was driving a 2015 Ford pick-up truck south over the bridge when he collided with a 1996 Ford four-door sedan, Anaya said. The sedan caught on fire because of the crash and ran into the car in front of it, a 2002 Pontiac.
Portsmouth resident Troy Mead Massey, 59, was driving the Ford sedan. He died upon impact, Anaya said.
The crash occurred about three miles south of River Road, near the start of the bridge, Anaya said.
