San Diego, CA : One person died in ravine crash on State Route 52 near Mission Trails Regional Park early Monday, December 28, 2015

One person was killed early Monday in a crash on State Route 52 near Mission Trails Regional Park.

The apparent single-vehicle crash on the westbound lanes near Mast Boulevard was reported shortly after 12:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The drivers was reportedly headed eastbound in the westbound lanes of SR-52.

The CHP reported that the sedan plummeted 200 feet off a bridge in a canyon area, which is located one mile west of Mast Boulevard off of SR-52.

CHP officers hiked into the ravine and a fire department helicopter used night vision technology to look for anybody that was thrown from the car. After about one hour, they determined only one person was in the car.

The CHP does not know if the driver had been drinking, had a health problem or an issue with their car. A tow truck was called to remove the wrecked vehicle.

This accident happened at the Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Collier Memorial Bridge in Santee, where there are numerous crosses and makeshift memorials. Authorities say this part of SR-52 is notorious for fatal crashes.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. The name of the person killed in the crash was not immediately available.
