Sherman, TX : OHP releases name of driver killed in Bryan County crash, chemical spill on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016
The driver of the wrecked truck, which caused a chemical spill near Caddo, Oklahoma, was ejected from the vehicle after it struck an overpass Wednesday afternoon.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol identified the driver as Randy Lewis Perkins, 49, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. OHP officials said in a news release that the vehicle veered off the west side of southbound U.S. Highway 69 for an unknown reason at about 3:57 p.m. The commercial Peterbilt truck struck the State Highway 22 bridge, and Mr. Perkins was ejected about 15 feet from the vehicle.
When the crash occurred, sulfuric acid spilled from the truck. OHP noted multiple vehicles were exposed and damaged from the hazardous materials release.
Mr. Perkins was pronounced dead at the scene from massive injuries and was transported to the Coffey-Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma. OHP noted it was unknown as of Thursday afternoon if a seat belt was in use. No one else was in the vehicle.
All lanes of Highway 69 and Highway 22 were closed into Thursday morning. The northbound lanes of both highways were reported as open before noon, but the southbound lanes had a detour around the crash site through the on and off ramps.Emergency personnel from Caddo, Durant, Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Bryan County Emergency Management responded to the scene.
