Deltona ,FL :Deputy hurt in Deltona crash involving DUI driver, troopers say on Saturday , June 27th 2015


A Volusia County sheriff's deputy was taken to a hospital after a crash involving a driver who was under the influence, the Florida Highway Patrol said.The crash happened around 5:25 p.m. Saturday at Fort Smith and Normandy boulevards in Deltona.Edward Flowers, 62, was traveling east on Fort Smith Boulevard in his Ford pickup as Deputy Paul Mele Jr., 26, traveled west in a marked Volusia County Sheriff's Office patrol car with its lights and sirens activated. Troopers said Mele was traveling behind another Sheriff's Office patrol car that also had its lights and sirens on.The first patrol car traveled through the intersection. As Mele entered the intersection, Flowers attempted to make a left turn.Troopers said Flowers traveled into the direct path of Mele's patrol car. Mele's patrol car was overturned by the impact.Mele was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center after complaining about neck pain, the Sheriff's Office said. Troopers said he suffered minor injuries.Flowers was not hurt. According to the Florida Highway Patrol's report, alcohol was a factor in the crash.Troopers said Flowers was arrested for driving under the influence and was charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
