Salisbury, North Carolina
A woman was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 85 in Rowan County Thursday morning, closing the highway for a time.
Highway Patrol says it happened around 5:15 a.m. on I-85 northbound at Exit 74, Julian Road, in Salisbury.
The woman was in a Buick when the car became disabled for some reason. Troopers say the woman got out of the car and that's when a tractor-trailer hit the Buick and the woman. The woman, whose name has not been released, was
pronounced dead on scene.
The tractor trailer driver, Ivan Milosavjevic, 31, got out and was unharmed.
Master Trooper Ned Moultrie says the tractor-trailer and Buick traveled several hundred feet before catching fire.
"Certainly You don't want to exit the vehicle on the interstate, because, that's just, uh, it's not gonna have a good consequence," Master Trooper Ned Moultrie said.
Moultrie says if your vehicle does become disabled, try to get it off the road and steer it to the shoulder before calling 911.
"To avoid delays, motorists should use the following detour:Motorists should take Exit 74 and make a left onto Julian Road. Continue on Julian Road for one mile, then make a right onto US-601 South/ Jake Alexander Blvd. Continue on US-601
South/Jake Alexander Blvd for one mile, then make a left to re-access I-85 North," NCDOT officials suggest.
The road is expected to reopen around 9:30 a.m.
Moultrie says the case is still under investigation. There's no word on possible contributing factors. Troopers will consult with Rowan District Attorney’s Office to discuss whether charges will be filed, Moultrie said.
