Truck dumps candy on Jane Addams Tollway
A semi-truck driver who nodded off behind the wheel while westbound on the Jane Addams Tollway Thursday morning dumped his load of candy all over the highway, authorities said.
Master Sgt. Mark Pilgram of the Illinois State Police Department said the unidentified truck driver was heading eastbound at 3:25 a.m. when he drove through 237 feet of guard rail. The site of the crash was near the former Shireland facility east of Route 20 in Hampshire. He said the truck drove into the right ditch at mile marker 42.5, flipped on its side, and dumped pounds of candy all over the highway.
He said the truck was pulled to the side of the highway at about 5:20 a.m., and workers began the task of cleaning the candy off the road while also unloading the semi.
It's unclear at this time if the truck driver was injured in the crash."When the semi is unloaded, the truck can be uprighted," he said.
