Lebanon, IN : Deputy's car destroyed after suspect crashes on Saturday, 24th September 2016
Boone County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Logan Campbell escaped injury, after a driver, allegedly operating while intoxicated, slammed into the back of his patrol car at approximately 9:15 p.m. Saturday night, according to the agency’s press release.
James Patrick McCue, 19, Mahomet, Ill., hit Deputy Campbell’s vehicle while trying to evade the officers pursuing him.
Montgomery County’s dispatch center contacted its Boone County counterpart while chasing McCue after he refused to stop. At that time, Indiana State Police and the Crawfordsville police were behind the 19-year-old.
McCue entered Boone County while traveling on I-74, and exited north on state Route 75 heading toward Advance. He hit a guide wire attached to a utility pole on County Road 500 West, before continuing on to where Campbell was waiting.
Campbell was setting stop sticks at Budd Road and County Road 500 West, when he saw McCue’s Mercury Mountaineer driving toward him. McCue swerved to avoid the sticks and hit Campbell’s squad car, causing severe damage and sending it into a bean field. The car is a total loss. McCue’s vehicle landed upside down in the field before catching fire.
Montgomery County and Boone County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled McCue from the vehicle. According to the press release, McCue suffered “a laceration to the head, broken teeth, abdominal pain, and cuts and bruises to his legs.” He was transported to Methodist Hospital.
Additional charges had not been filed as of press time.
