Three men are dead and two others in the hospital after the pickup truck they were riding in crashed in Leland Township.
Leelanau County sheriff's deputies and Leland Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a call Saturday just before 8 a.m. about a vehicle off the road on South Manitou Trail between Schomberg and Overby roads, according to a sheriff's department release. They arrived to find a 2008 Ford pickup truck off the road near where it struck a tree.
Inside were five men, according to the release. Emergency personnel began treating the injured and called in the Cedar Area Fire and Rescue and Northflight ground and air transport. Rescuers spent an hour extracting two injured rear seat passengers, who were taken to Munson Medical Center in serious to critical condition.
The driver, front seat passenger and a rear seat passenger were pronounced dead on the scene, according to the release. Their ages ranged from 26 to 44 years old, and they lived in southeast Michigan.
Sheriff's deputies will work through the weekend to investigate the crash and notify the victims' families, according to the release.
