Anderson,IN : EMT dies in early morning crash on January, Monday 22nd 2018

An emergency medical technician has died from injuries he sustained in a crash early this morning on U.S. 31 near Bunker Hill.

Police say a 2015 Chevrolet ambulance was headed southbound on U.S. 31 approaching a red stoplight at the west junction with Ind. 218 when the ambulance failed to stop for the red light and hit a 2103 Dodge Dart on the driver's side.

Officers from the Indiana State Police, Peru Police Department and the sheriff's departments of Cass and Miami counties were called to the crash about 3:45 a.m. Monday, according to a state police news release.

The release indicates the ambulance rolled onto its passenger side after the crash. The ambulance was carrying a 5-month-old patient, the infant's mother and EMT Mousa Chaban, 32, Mishawaka. Chaban was partially ejected from the ambulance during the crash, according to the release, and died from his injuries. Neither the infant nor the mother were injured.

Police believe the driver of the ambulance, 26-year-old Christine Wesner of Wyatt, fell asleep before the crash. The Dodge Dart, driven by 30-year-old Joseph Farrar of Brownsburg, was attempting to turn north onto U.S. 31 from East Ind. 218 and had the right-of-way in the intersection, according to the release.

Wesner was not injured in the crash. Farrer was taken by ambulance to a Peru hospital with a broken collarbone, according to the release. A passenger in the Dodge Dart, 20-year-old Jesse Wilkins, suffered a non-life threatening head injury and was also taken by ambulance to a Peru hospital, the release indicated.

Police are still investigating the crash, but they don't believe either alcohol or narcotics were a factor, according to the release.

Wesner and Chaban were working for Tri-County Ambulance Service based in Wakarusa. They were transporting the infant from a South Bend hospital to a hospital in Indianapolis.

Miami County EMS, Miami County Emergency Management, Pipe Creek Fire Department, Galveston Fire Department and Grissom Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
