Erie, PA : Motorcyclist critically injured in west Erie crash in the 1400 block of Cherry Street on Thursday, 11th October 2018

A motorcyclist was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in the 1400 block of Cherry Street, Erie police reported.

The crash was reported at 5:25 p.m. and occurred in the northbound lane of Cherry Street beneath a railroad overpass there.

Police said the motorcyclist — a male — was unconscious when he was taken by ambulance to UPMC Hamot, where he was in the intensive-care unit Thursday evening.

The motorcyclist and the driver of a Chevy Malibu were northbound on Cherry Street, with the motorcycle in front of the Malibu.

Police said they believe the Malibu struck the motorcycle from behind, throwing the motorcyclist up and behind the Malibu, which received heavy front-end damage. The motorcycle came to a stop in the northbound lane of Cherry Street about 20 feet in front of the Malibu.

The motorcyclist was found about 10 feet behind the Malibu.
