Fremont, CA : One killed in a multiple car crash on I-680 in Fremont on Monday, January 5, 2015

One person was killed in a multiple car crash Monday evening on southbound Highway 680 before the South Mission Boulevard offramp, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash, which occurred at 4:55 p.m., shut down four lanes of the highway, as ambulances and police responded to the scene. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man inside one of the cars struggling to breathe, according to Officer Peter Van Eckhardt.

That victim was pronounced dead at the scene, although Van Eckhardt said the man did not have a medical emergency. No other injuries were reported.

The roadway was expected to reopen by 7:45 p.m. and drivers are urged to avoid the area.
