A 28-year-old Minneola man was killed in a head-on crash in Ford County on Wednesday morning while attempting to pass another car.
The wreck occurred at 7:30 a.m. on U.S. 283 at milepost 35, about 3.5 miles north of Minneola.
According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Caleb Matthew Douglas was northbound on the highway in a 2016 Ford Explorer when he attempted to overtake and pass a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by James Morley Young, 20, also of Minneola.
Douglas collided with a southbound 2006 Freightliner semitractor-trailer driven by Sofia Esther Ponce, 57, of El Paso, Texas. All three vehicles attempted avoidance maneuvers before the collision, but the Explorer and semi struck head-on, then debris from the collision struck the Dodge Ram.
Douglas died at the scene. Ponce was taken to Western Plains Regional Hospital with injuries, while Young was not injured, the patrol reported.
