Roseville, CA : One person killed in car crash on Thursday December 17 2015
Roseville police suspect a combination of speed and alcohol consumption was the cause of an early morning car crash Thursday that killed a city resident.
Officials identified the victim as Shane Michael Caughey, 32. Police initially reported he was 28 years old.
Officers who responded at 1:17 a.m. to the crash on 12 Mile Road near Congress Street saw a 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo had left the road and struck a tree in front of a home. Caughey was wearing a seatbelt but died as a result of massive traumatic injuries, Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said.
Accident investigators determined Caughey was traveling west on 12 Mile Road approaching Congress, just east of Interstate 94, but inexplicably lost control of his car. There were no skid marks, and the vehicle left the road and went approximately 20 feet before striking the tree.
Officials believe Caughey was driving more than 70 mph where the speed limit in that stretch of 12 Mile Road is 45 mph.
First let me say on behalf of the men and women of the Roseville Police Department that our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of victim of today’s crash,” Berlin said in a prepared statement.
The force of the collision left the Monte Carlo virtually wrapped around the tree. First responders had to extricate the crash victim.
We think he was heading home. He lived about a block away,” Berlin said later. “We’re not sure where he was coming from.”
Berlin said veteran officers told him it was one of the most horrific crash wreckages they have seen in their career.
Westbound 12 Mile Road between I-94 and Little Mack was closed for approximately five hours during the on-scene investigation. Those lanes re-opened to motorists shortly before 7 a.m.
