Hereford, TX : Two people died in a two-vehicle crash on US-385 in Deaf Smith County Tuesday morning, April 4, 2017
The Texas Department of Public Safety was called to a two-vehicle crash on US-385 in Deaf Smith County Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of two people.
At approximately 9:30 a.m., Kenneth Bernal, 20, of Hereford was driving a truck tractor, pulling a semi-trailer, south on US-385 approximately 14 miles north of Hereford. Michael Betzold, 64, of Liberal, Kan., was driving a truck tractor (no trailer) northbound on US-385. The truck tractor began to hydro-plane on the wet roadway, causing Betzold to lose control of the vehicle.
The truck tractor slid into the southbound lane of travel and collided into the truck tractor/semi-trailer, driven by Bernal. Bernal was ejected from the vehicle on impact.
Bernal and Betzold were pronounced dead on scene by Deaf Smith County Justice of the Peace Karen Boren.
Bernal was not wearing his seat belt. Troopers were unable to determine if Betzold was wearing his seat belt due to the severity of damage to the truck tractor.
The road conditions were wet due to the rain in the area. No other vehicles were involved.
US-385 was closed to traffic during efforts.
