NSB motorcyclist hits railroad crossing arm in Port Orange, dies
A 65-year-old New Smyrna Beach motorcyclist was killed Friday when he crashed into a lowered railroad crossing arm in Port Orange, said Port Orange police Assistant Chief Wayne Miller.Hector Hernandez was on a 1997 Kawasaki Voyager motorcycle, believed to have been headed south toward Ridgewood Avenue, when he crashed into a railroad crossing arm at a railroad intersection, Miller said.The motorcycle crashed on Nova Road at the Florida East Coast Railway crossing about 9:30 a.m. Hernandez was ejected from the motorcycle after striking the railroad crossing arm, which was lowered for an approaching train. Hernandez died at the scene of the crash, Miller said. It appears Hernandez was not wearing a helmet, Miller said.The motorcycle did not make contact with the train. Port Orange police are conducting a traffic homicide investigation, Miller said.
