Shawnee, OK : Truck driver dies in U.S. 177 accident near Tecumseh on Friday morning, Septemper 9, 2016

The driver of a gravel hauler died Friday morning after he swerved the rig on U.S. 177 near Tecumseh to avoid hitting a school bus. That rig overturned and reportedly caught fire.

The fatality collision occurred about 7:07 a.m. on northbound U.S. 177, just south of Tucker Road in Tecumseh.
The 2005 Freightliner was northbound on U.S. 177 as a school bus was stopped northbound to pick up students, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

The driver of the rig swerved into the southbound lane and then departed the roadway to the left, where the hauler struck an embankment and overturned one-fourth time. The driver, whose name has not been released pending further investigation, was pinned for an unknown amount of time, the OHP reported. The driver was extricated by firefighters.

Tecumseh Fire Chief Aaron Williams said the rig was carrying a load of rocks. Fire crews extinguished a fire as part of the clean up but also had to off-load the rocks to another truck, Williams said.
The patrol reports the driver died at the scene and lists cause of the collision as unsafe speed.
It was rainy and the roadway was wet at the time of the accident, the report shows.
Several witnesses reportedly saw the accident, including a student who said he was on the bus and posted a comment about it on Facebook.

“I was on the bus when it happened. Praying for the family and it was just heart breaking seeing him run off the road to miss the bus,” that comment reads.

Linda Green also commented, “He swerved to miss a school bus that was stopped. God bless his soul.”
Trooper Will Arnett of the Pottawatomie County Detachment of Troop A, along with several other state troopers, worked the scene with assistance from the Tecumseh Police and Fire Departments, Citizen Potawatomi Nation police, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office and Earlsboro Fire Department.
