A 37-year-old Hammond man was killed Thursday (April 16) in a single-vehicle accident near Ponchatoula, according to State Police. Troopers blamed "speed and lack of seat belt as the primary factors in the crash."
Nolan K. Bel was driving southbound on U.S. 51 when he took the southbound ramp to I-55 very fast, State Police Troop L said. Bel "failed to negotiate the ramp and exited the roadway," according to a Troop L press release.
At that point, Bel's car flipped. Bel wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the tumbling car, State Police said.
Investigators with Troop L and the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office put the time of the crash at between 1 and 3 a.m. Thursday. Bel's blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police crime lab for testing.
