Jacksonville, FL : 20-year-old killed in a single vehicle accident in Arlington on Tuesday morning, February 10, 2015
A 20-year-old woman died Tuesday morning in a crash on Arlington Expressway after she saw a state trooper checking drivers' speeds on the expressway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Danai Marie Nole sped away from the trooper going 80 mph in a gray 2006 Infiniti, exited onto the westbound Arlington Expressway service road, hit a curb and guardrail and overturned into a body of water at the bottom of an embankment, troopers said. FHP said the trooper Nole passed was not pursuing the vehicle or trying to pull Nole over.
"He did confirm a high rate of speed but did not actively engage the vehicle at that time," FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan said. "Almost immediately after passing the officer, (Nole) tried to exit on the service road, where (she) lost control."
Nole was ejected from the car, which landed about 10 feet below the roadway, troopers said.
A witness told News4Jax that the impact nearly broke the car in half, and a viewer provided a picture of the mangled car.
"It sounded like a bomb," said Benjamin Lovick. "That car was split in half. Half of it was in the ground -- half of it was in the tree."
The crash happened about 9:40 a.m. near Arlington Road North and Rogero Road on the westbound Arlington Expressway service road.
Part of the service road was shut down for about three hours while troopers investigated.
