Chicago, IL : 77-year-old man killed and two other people injured in three-vehicle crash near Grayslake on Wednesday afternoon, March 22, 2017
A 77-year-old man was killed and two other people were injured in a three-vehicle accident near Grayslake on Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.
A preliminary investigation determined that a 2011 Chrysler minivan, driven by a 74-year-old Grayslake woman, was traveling eastbound on Peterson Road and attempted to make a left turn onto Behm Lane when the minivan was struck on the passenger side by a westbound GMC Sierra, driven by a 45-year-old Wauconda man, according to Sgt. Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
The front-end of a Honda Civic, driven by an 85-year-old Grayslake woman, was also struck following the first collision.
A 77-year-old Grayslake man, who was a passenger in the front seat of the minivan, was pronounced dead after being transported by Grayslake Fire Department rescue personnel to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, authorities said. The woman driving the minivan was also transported to Condell in critical condition, Covelli said.
Grayslake fire rescue personnel also transported the driver of the GMC Sierra, according to Lt. Doug Slazes of the Grayslake Fire Department, but his injuries were described as likely minor.
The driver of the third vehicle was checked at the scene and released without transport, Slazes said
Covelli said the accident occurred at about 2:50 p.m., and that Peterson Road remained closed at 5 p.m. Wednesday and was expected to remain closed to traffic from Route 60 to Alleghany Road for at least a couple of hours after that.
Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said an autopsy was scheduled Thursday for the Grayslake man, whose name was being withheld pending the notification of all family members.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigation Unit.
