Charlotte,NC : Volvo driver charged in death of Charlotte woman, 71, killed in 4-car crash on may, Thursday 11th 2017
Charlotte, North Carolina
A 68-year-old Charlotte man is facing misdemeanor death by vehicle charges after causing a four-car accident that left another driver dead Thursday afternoon on Monroe Road, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
The victim was a 71-year-old woman named Barbara Waldron Dennis.
Charged in her death is William Vincent Graham, Jr., who will be taken into custody after being released from a hospital, officials said. His injuries were minor, officials said. A passenger in his vehicle, Karen Barb Graham, also had minor injuries, officials said.
The crash happened Thursday at 4:47 p.m. at the intersection of Monroe Road and Greylyn Business Park Drive.
A 2011 Volvo XC90 driven by Graham was attempting to turn left from Greylyn Business Park Drive onto Monroe Road, and drove directly into the path of oncoming cars, officials said.
Barbara Dennis suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. She was not wearing her seat belt, officials said.
Three other drivers and one passenger were transported to Novant Medical Center-Matthews for treatment of their injuries.
The crash is under investigation to determine if excessive speed is a contributing factor.
Motorists say that stretch of Monroe is “extremely dangerous.”
“The turn lane is a free-for-all of head-on traffic turning toward businesses on either side,” said Brent Gilroy on Facebook.
“No traffic lights to break up the flow or allow protected left turns along more than a mile of road, where the speed limit is 45. But most cars go 55-60 (often faster).”
