Denver, CO : 12-year-old California boy dies after ski crash at Breckenridge Ski Resort on April, Saturday 8th 2017
A 12-year-old California boy has died after colliding with a tree stump Saturday at Breckenridge Ski Resort, authorities and the ski area say.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says the boy, who was visiting Colorado with his family, was skiing in trees near the beginner Springmeier Run when the crash happened. He was flown by a Flight for Life helicopter to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora.“After further emergency care and evaluation, he was pronounced deceased at Children’s Hospital on Sunday morning,” the ski area said.
The Summit County coroner identified the victim Monday as Logan Goodwin of Hermosa Beach. The coroner ruled his death accidental, a result of blunt-force trauma to the abdomen.
“Breckenridge Ski Resort, Breckenridge Ski Patrol and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” John Buhler, vice president and chief operating officer of Breckenridge, said in a statement.At least 13 people have died while skiing or snowboarding in Colorado this season, which includes — besides the fatal Saturday crash — three men and a teen girl who have died at Breckenridge this season.
A 26-year-old Mexican man who died after crashing into snow in February at Breckenridge Ski Resort suffered severe head trauma, according to the Summit County coroner’s office.
Kevin Pitts, a 48-year-old Longmont man, died from blunt force trauma after striking a tree at the resort in December. Sean Haberthier, a 47-year-old Denver man, died after striking a tree at Breckenridge in January.
In March, 15-year-old Tess Smith of Wichita, Kan., died after what officials say was a “serious accident” at Breckenridge during her first time skiing. The Wichita Eagle reported the girl was alert and speaking with ski patrollers after the crash, but her condition deteriorated.
The Summit Daily reports this season’s total in Colorado is the deadliest since 2011-12, when a record 22 people died while skiing or riding in the state.
