Austin, TX : Two local educators killed in car crash Austin Texas on Tuesday October 13 2015
Irene and Kate Edwards, mother and daughter educators from the Simi Valley and Oak Park unified school districts, died in a car accident Oct. 10 in Austin, Texas.The crash reportedly occurred when a driver of a minivan ran a red light and crashed into the passenger side of the Edwards’car.Irene Edwards, 64, a special education aide in Simi Valley Unified School District, died at the scene. Kate Edwards, a 33-year-old teacher at Oak Park Independent School, was rushed to Seton Hospital Williamson in the Austin area and died the same night, according to news reports.Rick Edwards, Irene’s husband and Kate’s father, remains in critical condition at the Texas hospital. Kate Edwards’ fiancé, Dave Foy, survived the crash with minor injuries.According to Stewart Mc- Gugan, principal of Oak Park Independent School and Oak View High School, the Edwards family and Foy were driving to a wedding rehearsal dinner for Kate Edwards’ brother, Clayton Edwards, when the accident happened.Kate was special both as a person as well as a talented and committed teacher,” McGugan said. “We will miss her. Our thoughts and prayers are now focused on her father who is in intensive care at a local Texas hospital.”
Foy told The Acorn Rick Edwards remains in critical condition and is “putting up a very strong fight.”
Kate Edwards was certificated to teach classes for kindergarten through 12th grade at OPIS, although McGugan said most of her students were in high school.She also ran a student leadership group and was committed to various causes, including raising money for troops overseas, helping foster students at Casa Pacifica and animal-rescue work.
She was also an avid dog lover,” McGugan said. “She was all about dog rescuing and not harming animals.”
Edwards taught at OPIS for the past four years.This news saddens our hearts greatly,” said Julie Miller, the mother of a student at the Oak Park school.
