Waynesville, MO : Newburg man killed in ATV crash in Phelps County on Saturday evening, July 9, 2016

A Newburg man was killed in an ATV crash south of Newburg Saturday evening in Phelps County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Don F. Yelton, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene by Phelps County Coroner Andy Davis on County Road 7490, about 7 miles south of Newburg.

The patrol states that Yelton was driving a 2003 Kawasaki ATV south on the county road and was traveling too fast. According to the preliminary patrol incident report, Yelton attempted to turn sharply, causing the ATV to overturn.

Yelton was ejected and struck a tree.

There was minor damage to the ATV. The crash occurred at about 6:25 p.m. The patrol report states that he was taken to Teague and Son Funeral Home in Newburg.

This is the third traffic fatality reported by the patrol this month in the Troop I region, which covers Phelps and five other counties in south central Missouri. This is the 13th traffic fatality so far this year in the Troop I area.

The Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District assisted the patrol.
