NEW BUFFALO, MI : 2 men die in crash just outside LP County on Saturday, November 19th 2016
Two 20-year-old Illinois men died Saturday when their car slid under a semi during a three-vehicle crash on I-94 near New Buffalo, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department reported.
According to a Nov. 19 Berrien Country Sheriff's Department press release, the incident occurred at 9:54 a.m. EST near the westbound 2.4 mile marker.
Deputy Jennifer Newman of the Sheriff’s Department New Buffalo Township detail reported that a Trans West semi from Quebec collided with a car driven by a Grand Rapids area woman. The car came to rest in the median while the semi came to rest on the right shoulder.
The car carrying the Illinois men then struck the semi’s trailer and slid under the unit. The men, a driver and passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene, Newman reported.
No names or specific hometowns were released.
The driver of the first car and a passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken by Medic 1 to St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, Newman reported. The truck driver and a passenger were not hurt.
The crash investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Accident Team was still ongoing as of Sunday.
The department got help for the investigation and traffic control from the New Buffalo Township Fire Department and police from Chikaming Township and New Buffalo, and Pokagon Tribal Police.
