REGION, FL : Three killed, one critically injured in Memorial Day on Saturday, May 27, 2017
Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of the summer season and more cars meant more serious accidents across the Panhandle.
In Bay County, one man was killed and another critically injured in separate accidents Saturday night, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports.
Around 7 p.m., a motorcycle crash shut down two lanes of the Hathaway Bridge. The driver, a white male in his 60's, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, though no further details were immediately available.
Later that night, at 10:25 p.m., FHP responded to a pedestrian struck in the southbound lane of U.S. 231 near Veal Road. Gonzella Yancie, 58, or Warner Robbins, GA, had parked his car on the west shoulder of the highway to change a flat tire when he was struck by Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by Brandon Perry Luke, 19, of Tifton, GA, according to a report by FHP. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash and charges are possible pending investigation, the report stated.
Early Saturday morning, along U.S. 98 in front of Hurlburt Field in Santa Rosa County, Paul Alex Nagy, 44, of Navarre, was killed when his Pontiac van collided with a fence in front of the Air Force Base, according to FHP reports. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, FHP said.
And early Sunday morning, Travis Taylor Ham, 28, of Chipley, was killed while traveling south on SR 77 in Washington County when his Chevy Tahoe left the roadway and drove onto the grass shoulder. According to FHP, Ham’s truck struck a tree, ejecting him into the woods, where he was found and pronounced dead. Alcohol did not play a factor in that crash, though Ham was not wearing a seatbelt, FHP wrote.
