Boulder,CO : Erie teen sentenced to 6 years in fatal DUI crash on may, wednesday 3rd 2017
A teenager who struck and killed a woman while driving drunk in 2016 was sentenced in Boulder District Court on Wednesday to six years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, according to online court records.
Niraj Gautam, 19, pleaded guilty in March to one count of DUI-related vehicular homicide, and prosecutors dropped another count of reckless driving-related vehicular homicide, two counts of DUI and one count of false reporting, court records indicate.
Gautam, who is an Erie resident, was arrested in March 2016 after police allege he crashed into 65-year-old Loretta Avalos near the intersection of Dillon Road at U.S. 287. He told police he was trying to make a U-turn.
Avalos died from her injuries.
Gautam had faced up to 12 years. According to court records, he was taken into custody following the sentencing. He had been free on bond since shortly after the crash.
