Woodland, CA : Woman dies in major car crash on CR-102 Friday afternoon, May 20, 2016
A Woodland woman has died as a result of injuries received in a Friday afternoon three-vehicle accident.
The identity of the 70-year-old woman is being withheld until her relatives have been notified. She died at the UC Davis Medical Center as a result of her injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Three children traveling with the victim — whose ages ranged from 1- to 7 years old — suffered minor to moderate injuries, according to the CHP.
The accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. south of Woodland on County Road 102, south of CR-25.
According to the CHP, the accident was a head-on collision, which completely blocked CR-102 when emergency crews arrived.
Apparently, a 2005 Toyota Corolla being driven by the victim, was traveling north on CR-102 at between 45- and 50 mph. A Freightliner 3-axle flatbed truck was traveling south on CR-102 at around 45 mph, driven by Harjinder Singh, 51, of Fairfield, who received no injuries in the collision.
Also traveling south on CR-102, directly behind Singh’s Freightliner was a 2007 Chevy pickup driven by David A. Shepard of Woodland.
For unknown reasons, the Corolla drifted into the southbound lane and directly into the path of the Freightliner. Singh immediately applied the brakes and swerved toward the southbound right shoulder, according to the CHP. However, Singh couldn’t avoid colliding with the Corolla which was destroyed and blocked the northbound lane of CR-102. The Freightliner also sustained major damage and came to rest blocking the southbound lane of CR-102.
Shepard’s pickup sustained minor damage as a result of flying debris from the impact between the Freightliner and Corolla.
Alcohol is not suspected as being a reason for the crash, the CHP reported. An investigation is continuing.
